Public Relations and its Future.

Over the years Public Relations has been a growing industry. Many people feel that it will continue to grow in the future. I still believe that the advances in technology that we are seeing is going to benefit public relations. Technology has created many tools for practitioners to utilize. It has become so much easier for practitioners to get a message out to the public. At the same time all of the technology that is at our disposal is making people lazy. Lazy in the sense that because we can hold a conversation of over the phone or over e-mail people do not actually get up to go talk with people face to face. This hurts relationship building.

John Paluszek states that public relations will have to adjust to the changing world much like it has done over the years. He said that public relations is “now truly global and connected.” PR practitioners need to be able to adjust to the many different situations they will face during their careers as the world changes. Paluszek states that PR practitioners can adapt much like our predecessors did 60 years ago.

I feel that the future of public relations is going to be determined by the people who are PR practitioners. We live in a world that is changing daily, if not hourly. As human beings we make adjustments naturally, but it is especially important that PR practitioners are attuned to the changing world.

In my original blog regarding the future of public relations I mentioned that I did not feel that all of the technology we have is necessarily always a good thing. First, relationship building is hard to do over e-mail. What happened to the time when people used to actually sit down and have a face-to-face conversation. Another issue with e-mail in public relations has just come to my attention. Seth Godin points out that because it is easy to just add another name to an e-mail list does not mean that you should always do that. Sending press releases over e-mail is convenient and most journalists prefer this method, but as PR professionals we are diminishing our credibility by not being audience specific.

I think that sometimes we get to focused on just getting a message out there that we forget who we are talking to. I have read blogs regarding public relations. It seems that the general concensus is that technology is great, but it can hurt us as well.

I want to leave you with one question: Technology makes PR practitioners jobs easier, but is it making us less affective?

The Future of Public Relations

Today, we are very dependant upon technology. It is a good and bad thing all at the same time. In public relations it allows us to reach more people in a shorter period of time, but it diminishes relationships. It is always better to talk with someone in person or on the phone. With the Internet people not longer see the need to verbally communicate with each other. Text messaging has somewhat ruined the grammar skills that are necessary in this field. It is as if we no longer speak in full sentences. All of this technology is hurting public relations in the aspect of relationship building.

Our job as public relations professionals is to effectively communicate with people. We need to be able to sit down and talk with people face-to-face. Technology has taken away the face-to-face contact we have.

In the future, I see the public relations field utilizing the available technology to its benefit. At the same, I feel that the basic traditions and principles of public relations will remain. We must adapt like everyone else to changes in technology, but we must not allow the changes to alter the way we effectively communicate.

The good thing about all of the technology we have is that it increases the number of mediums that we can utilize in public relations. There are so many ways to get a message out there that it is ridiculous.

I would like to work in foreign relations when I graduate. There is a need for public relations professionals in this field because the world image of the United States is not too great right now. I am a Spanish major and hope to be able to utilize my language skills in the field of foreign relations. All in all, I feel that the profession of public relations will have a positive future.

My Coaching Experiences

I coach cheer at a gym here in Oklahoma. The past two years have been enlightening for me. It is amazing how different the younger generation and my generation are. I have found that the younger generation has no concept of what respect is. I do want to say that there are some girls who do understand what respect is. In general, there is a lack of respect for their peers and for themselves. I do not know how many times I have had to get onto girls for snapping at each other for no reason.

There are many situations in which I have had to act like a parent. A few weeks ago I had a little girl who proceeded to do something that she was told not to do. This was when we were waiting for her parents to pick her up. Her mother saw what she did, but did not get onto her. I was the one that got on to her for doing what she did. Her mother then apologized to me for her behavior, but that was it.

I just think that is interesting to see how different people raise their children. I am not a parent, but there are times when I see a kid or even one of my peers treat their parent in a poor manner that to this day I would still get reprimanded for. I am 19 and I would never even dare talk to my parents the way I see people talk to their parents. I hope that the younger generations will learn to respect themselves and the people around them in the future.

OSU On-Campus Food

I was just in the food court in the Student Union and realized how over priced the food is in the Union. Last year as a freshman, I never really looked at the prices of the food because I had a meal plan. Now, it is not cost effective for upper class men to eat on campus. I do not want to pay $4 for a sandwich. I would rather just stay hungry until I get home. I just do not understand why the campus has to charge so much for food when we already pay so much just to go to school here.

Changes should be made in the food court here on campus. The food is not all that great to begin with, so why do we pay so much. They get away with it because students with meal plans just swipe their card and do not think about it. It would be interesting to see what would happen if the food on campus was boycotted and if changes would be made.
